Culture and Cuisine at FVL
Over the years, Fox Valley Lutheran High School has welcomed students from Australia, Austria, Bolivia, Brazil, China, Columbia, Costa Rica, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Great Britain, Honduras, Hong Kong, Hungary, Italy, Japan, Kazakhstan, Mexico, Montenegro, Netherlands, Norway, Pakistan, Peru, Portugal, Romania, Russia, South Africa, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, Tanzania, Thailand, Turkey, Ukraine, Uzbekistan, Vietnam, and Zimbabwe.
This has exposed the “home grown” students of FVL to get a much greater exposure to different cultures all over the world. It has also given the faculty and students of FVL the opportunity to do some world mission work right here at home. This has led to a good number of international student finding out about their Lord. What a blessing that is.
You can find out a little bit about the international students who are currently attending FVL on Saturday, November 17 from 4:30 to 6:30 PM at their Culture and Cuisine event. You will be able to sample foods from about a dozen countries around the world in the FVL commons. After you’re done doing that, you can waddle over to the FVL auditorium for a special presentation.
In this presentation, you will hear several international students talking about their homelands and their experiences attending school at FVL. There is also a special display of honor given to the host families who are taking care of these special students throughout the year. It might even inspire you to get involved in this program in the future.
We’ve had our greeter program in place for a while now and it’s been working our very nicely. Our members have been getting a better chance to know each other and it’s helping to make our congregation an even friendlier place.
Here is the schedule for the month of November: Mitch Voight: November 4, Ron Voight: November 11, Marian Voight: November 18, and Sue Voight: November 25.
Veterans Day Events
The students who make up the FVL Band will present a special concert for our veterans. This concert includes patriotic music, inspirational readings, and heartfelt thanks from the students. This concert will be presented twice on Thursday, November 8. The first concert is at 10:00 AM at St. Paul’s in Appleton.
The second is at 1:30 PM at Bethlehem in Hortonville. All are invited to come and enjoy this concert. Veterans are encouraged to attend.
On Monday, November 12, the students of Fox Valley Lutheran High School will host the veterans of our area for a breakfast event.
This will take place from 8:00 to 10:30 AM in the FVL commons area. We thank the students of FVL for remembering our veterans. Of course, we join with them in thanking our veterans for their service to their country.
You are welcome to stop by any of these events and thank veterans for their service to their country.
As a member of the FVL Federation of partner churches, the high school is asking our members to consider donating items for upcoming events that include Musicfest, Foxfest, and FVL’s annual golf outing. These items will be collected in November and then used to create auction baskets for these events. Suggestions on what to donate are available. Please also consider helping with these events by signing up on the volunteer sheet. Both pre-event and event day help is needed. The FVL Events Coordinator will personally contact those who sign up. Thanks for your help with these events that help support valuable programs at our Lutheran high school.
In other FVL support news… The Bargain Garden Thrift Shop is excited to announce it has reached ONE MILLION DOLLARS in donations to FVL. Federation members, we could not have done it without you—volunteers from your congregations, donations of clean and gently used items, and shopping to bring home bargains for yourself and your family—all of which support FVL’s ministry. Whatever your contribution, we and FVL thank you. To God be the glory—great things He has done!
Pastor Joel Jenswold from Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Hortonville recently accepted a call to Illinois. You may remember him from his preaching in our Lenten service rotation or you may have met him at a Bethlehem service over the last several years.
Since there will be a vacancy at Bethlehem, Pastor Lillo will be helping out by taking part in a pulpit exchange as long as the vacancy lasts. On the fourth Sunday of each month, Pastor Lillo and Pastor Rosenberg will be exchanging pulpits. Pastor Lillo will be at Bethlehem and Pastor Rosenberg will be here.
Please give Pastor Rosenberg a warm welcome when he comes to share the Word of God during this pulpit rotation.
Bible Class 2018-2019
We have been a little slow to start Bible class this year… Meaning: We haven’t started Bible class yet this year. We will be remedying that sad state of affairs this month. Throughout the “school year,” we will be looking at some of the “little” books of the Bible. These are shorter books that contain a lot in their relatively few pages.
Some of the books that we intend to look at are… Jonah which tells a bigger story than one about a man swallowed by a huge fish (or is it a whale, we’ll talk about that).
We will also look at the book of Ruth which tells one heck of a love story, but also shows the amazing grace of God in bringing his gospel to a very unlikely place. Finally, we’ll also look at 1 John in which the apostle explores the many facets of belonging to God.
We may also take a look at the subject of angels in the couple of weeks leading up to Christmas.
Reformation, Thanksgiving, and Falling Back
A Joint Reformation Service will be held on Sunday, November 4 at 3:00 pm in the Fox Valley Lutheran High School auditorium (5300 N. Meade Street, Appleton). Guest preacher is Rev. Dr. Michael Berg, professor of theology at Wisconsin Lutheran College in Milwaukee. Liturgist is Pastor John Qualmann. All Federation members are invited to celebrate our gospel heritage restored to us in the Reformation of the 1500’s. We are saved by Grace alone, by Faith alone, and according to Scripture alone. Please join us for this special worship opportunity!
We will be having our Thanksgiving song service on Wednesday, November 21 at 6:30 PM. This year, our theme is “Give Thanks with the Apostle Paul.” We’ll look at a number of things for which the Apostle Paul expressed thanks in his epistles. Come and give thanks to the Lord in this special service.
Please remember that you need to set your clocks back one hour before you go to bed on Saturday, November 3. If you don’t, you’ll show up at church an hour early on Sunday. No one wants that, do they?
